The regional watersheds are divided into two meta-basins separated by the Carpathian Mountains and the Sudeten Range on the borders of southern Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The area south of these mountain ranges forms the Danube Basin, which drains into the Black Sea. The area north of these mountain ranges drains into the Baltic. The Elbe and Oder Rivers originate in the Black Triangle region-the border areas of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany. Several smaller river basins in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina drain into the Adriatic Sea, south of the Danube. Rivers define the borders of many countries, and therefore potential transport of waterborne pollutants links many countries. In the following figure, the arrows show potential long-distance transport of waterborne pollutants. As with airborne pollutants, it appears that there is significant potential for transboundary migration of waterborne pollutants throughout this region.
